In Support of the Stay Positive leak…

This is from John Tyler-

I guess it pretty much sums it up-

I just got done reading the whole thread that you linked from, and wanted to respond to your post because I felt it was nice to read something that was even handed and not proselytizing.

On a personal level (read: delete this at will from the comments, but I just want to toss this out there), the Hold Steady are one of a handful of artists who are capable of genuinely effecting me. More than any other band they regularly reach for and attain the Modernist ideal of transcendence.

As much as any fan might feel loyal to the band, I think its important to remember why we feel that way in the first place: the way the music can touch us.

I was in a terrible place today and listening to Stay Positive, that changed. The album turned my day around, and considering that I am at a significant transitional point in my life right now, I can safely say that its effects will extend far beyond the next few hours.

Of course that doesn’t change anything about the ethics of intellectual property or artists’ rights, but I think it does demonstrate that at the end of the day the work of art is more important than the means of distribution.

Those of us who are (or, at least consider ourselves to be) fans will buy the album, see the shows, and buy Craig and the boys as many rounds of drinks as we can afford, regardless of listening to an advance copy.

I agree that whoever posted the leak probably isn’t a fan. I don’t feel bad for downloading the album, but even still I wouldn’t post a leak if the band had trusted me with an advance.

I think you’re right and that any negative feelings people are experiencing right now should be directed towards the person(s) who acted intentionally and in violation of a
trust (express or implied) that had been granted to them by the band. The leak will not cause me to give one penny less to the band than I would otherwise, but the person who leaked it has certainly made sure that the band will be deprived of income from other (non-fan) individuals, and that person should feel guilty. But I won’t.

Already this album has made me shudder, laugh, smile, and cry. I’ve already taken its title to heart, and that is what matters.

And even if Craig, Franz, and Koob show up at my house tomorrow and, as people trying to make a living tell as artists, tell me that they’re upset that I downloaded the album; I still think that they, as artists, would be happy that their creation, their music, their art is helping people to be happy, feel unified, and stay positive. Even if it is two months early.

Thoughts on the ‘Stay Positive’ leak

From what I can gather, it appears that The Hold Steady’s forthcoming EP Stay Positive was predictably leaked into the greedy little hands of the internet sometime yesterday- nearly six weeks before the scheduled release date of July 15.

Message boards and scene reports are already abuzz with speculation of an earlier rescheduled release date due to the leak.

So that’s the story.

News of this wasn’t surprising. These days, it’s almost a requirement for any band whose main marketing arena is the internet and social media to “leak” a record.

But this leak most likely wasn’t a marketing ploy by the label.

No, this leak came from some writer, reviewer, music director or radio DJ working in the industry.

Judging by some of the responses on the band’s message forum, it sounds like most of the hardcore fans are even debating whether or not to dip their beaks into the torrent sites in search of a copy.
Sure, sure- this isn’t the first time a record was leaked. It happens to nearly every new release in this day and age.

Will it affect record sales? Maybe a little, but judging by the tone of the thread on The Hold Steady’s message board it sounds as if nearly all of the die-hards might download a copy (if they haven’t already) but will still purchase the digital, disc or vinyl version when it’s officially released in July.

And there are some arguments on the board that this leak is the equivalent of the Titanic hitting that iceberg for the band’s fourth record, Stay Positive.

What do I think? I’m glad you asked.

I think that having a tool such as the internet at our fingertips today comes with great responsibility.

Sure, it’s easy to get caught up in reckless abandon on the internet- what with all of the porn and politics- but when it comes to the music- it’s a completely different world these days.

What’s most bothersome to me about this situation is that someone working in the industry got an advance copy of the record. That person was most likely either a journalist of some sort, an FM DJ or an independent blogger.

The person who leaked this record was not a fan.

Trust me, I know PLENTY of Hold Steady fans- hardcore, borderline-religious fans- and if one of them were strolling down the street and came across a copy of the record, chances are they’d go send a Private Message to Koob on the message board asking where to send the disc back to.

Hold Steady fans (as far as I can tell) seem to be a wholesome, genuinely respectful bunch.

So how does one greedy blogger justify taking the proverbial Christmas Gifts in the basement closet nearly six weeks before the holiday and blast it out there for all the world to take?

Anonymously, of course.

Sure, the promo discs were encrypted somehow. But have you used the internet before? It’s not difficult to find programs to de-authorize everything. (I’d safely guess that Netflix has doubled the personal DVD collection of many-a-thousand person)

But it’s the anonymity that’s most dangerous with this scenario. Some blogger who was fortunate enough to be given an advance copy of this disc felt it was his or her right to take a hard working band’s labor-fruits and put them out there for the masses to take at their own free will.

Will the blogger or writer potentially ruin it for the rest of us?

Not likely.

But they sure have personified the fact that the music business is an ugly, dangerous and impossibly hard to trust beast.

Many people I’ve met seem to be in this biz strictly for personal gain; of course we all need to eat, but where’s the compassion? The RESPECT?

It seems to be missing in the lexicon of the industry.

Who leaked Stay Positive? We’ll most likely never know.

But here I am listening to Stay Positive for the third time since I downloaded it last night.

And dude, it’s a GREAT record.

But I have to admit that I do feel sort of guilty.

Sure, sure, I’m not the guy that uploaded it. Promoters don’t get advance copies of new releases. We get the headaches of the tour.

But the feeling I have right now is similar to when I was eight years old and found “Santa’s” offerings in the storage closet in the basement of the house I grew up in…in November.

Saab Afterlife

Remember my old Red Saab that got hit, towed and held ransom by Don’s Towing last January?
Here’s something of an update; file this under “One Man’s Garbage Is Another Man’s Gold”-

With all of the body damage and starting issues, coupled with the fact that she had well over two hundred thousand miles on it, I had it on Craigslist for five hundred bucks.

Got a few calls immediately and one of the first people to check it out was a guy named Ben and his wife Chrissy. They told me this grandiose story about a somewhat-underground race which participants main rule is that the vehicle they use in the race cannot cost more than two hundred fifty dollars.

The race runs from New York City to New Orleans over five days of Memorial Day weekend- and because of the start and end points, the trip is known as the Babe Rally- Babe meaning Big Apple to the Big Easy.

Part wanting to just be done with the Saab and part happy knowing that at least my dear car would have a somewhat-glorious and fun filled afterlife, I agreed to their offering price of two hundred fifty dollars.

The only caveat in the deal, however, was that they must keep me updated on the trip and if my favorite little red sun faded orange car wins the Babe Rally this year.

Yesterday afternoon, I got a text from Ben: “www.teambornfromjets.com is our site for the rally. Car is doing great so far, on our way south from new york on day 1″

After typing in the URL, I nearly hit the floor when I saw what my beat up little red Saab had morphed into:

And so it goes. My car- which had become a parking ticket attracting hit-and-run magnet over the course of two and a half years gets a new lease on life- because of four young, eager and fun loving kids who decided to enter what looks like a pretty fun race.

Tweeting my Twip

After a tough decision and something of a closing of a chapter of my life last week, I decided it was as good a time as any to take a little trip away from Harrisburg to clear my head and recharge my batteries…along with my outlook and attitude about where exactly I am at this point in life…and with the hopes that when I return sometime later this week, things will look a little different.

They always do, right?

I’ve lived in Harrisburg for seven years now.

Which is just about five and a half years longer than the longest amount of time I spent in any one city prior to my landing in the Midstate.

But due to the way the cards landed, I found myself firmly planted in Central Pennsylvania- like it or not..seemingly til’ death do us part.

Every so often, I like to pack a bag, pick a direction and venture out for a few days.

And this time, my trip is going like this: Saturday in Jersey overnight for Mothers Day with the fam- which consisted of eating the weight of a horse in pasta, napping and eating again.

The plan was to spend today tripping around New York City- which would have been nice had the rain and wind not arrived last night.

So for now, I’m just hangin’ out at my folks. Think I’m gonna drive my kid sister to work later today and maybe get some dinner with old friends tonight-

But tomorrow morning is where the real fun begins- I get back on an Amtrack at around 8AM bound for Providence, Rhode Island- get in around noon and spend the day hanging around that city- and venturing about thirty miles south to a town called Narragansett to catch Toubab Krewe at a place called The Wheelhouse Tavern.

It’s one of those bare-bones sort of trips. I’ve got everything I need and a completely open schedule for the next ninety six hours or so.

Backpack with my laptop, couple clean tee shirts, socks and drawers, a hoodie, my iPod, cell phone, a few packs of smokes and a couple hundred bucks.

And the best part- I’m doing this whole jaunt via public transportation.

Amtrack from Harrisburg to Newark, then Newark to Providence and back to Harrisburg is a paltry hundred and fifty five bucks.

So in addition to not shelling out almost four bucks a gallon on a trip that would easily require three fill ups, I get to kick back with my thoughts and my music- on a refreshing journey which I rarely get to take.

So, updates will be sparse this week. I’ve been Tweeting much of my journey thus far- and will probably continue to do so.

Nightly News, Here I Come-

Watch out, Mike Parker, Alicia Richards and Dennis Owens-

(I’m totally kidding. We shot this last summer the day the closing of The Spot was announced)
