I’m a bagel snob.
Okay? There…I said it.
I. Am. A. Bagel. Elitist.
Grew up in the Bagel/Pizza capitol of the world…so, consider my palate spoiled.
People say that it’s the water in Jersey that makes the bagels so good.
And I’ve said it for years…with the exception of Ressler’s in Mechanicsburg and Bob’s in Lemoyne, our Bagel-options are relatively limited here in the Midstate.
That said- I’ve always had sort of a long-term goal of opening my own bagel/coffee shop somewhere in Midtown. The only problem, though, is that I don’t know how to make bagels.
Until yesterday morning, that is.
A simple Google search of “bagel recipe” lead me to a foolproof article by a guy named John Lee. There’s no need for me to re-post the how-to. Lee does a perfect job.
After two failed attempts yesterday (I used “active” yeast instead of “instant” yeast incorrectly in the first batch and then too much water in the second batch), I set out, early this morning, to get the third batch right.
And after doing so- I don’t think I’ll ever buy another bagel from Giant ever again.
Jersey Bagels coming soon to midtown?
Possibly…gotta find fifty grand first.

You need to come to colorado and give lessons to local businesses… I support bagels without borders.
Dude,
Why would you even think of going to Giant for bagels. That’s like going to Borders for porn. Did you ever try Bagel Lovers? Definitely not as good as a Jersey bagel, but not bad.
Nice looking roll job on the dough Jersey. Speaking from experience, of course. I was one of Bob’s first employees back in the day. Boiled n’ Baked, that’s how we did ‘em. Thanks for bringing back fond memories of driving to work through empty streets at the crack of dawn and the rapid-fire bagel madness that ensued. Homemade bagels, yes. But there is still something to be said for helping bleary-eyed people start their day off with a kind word, a stiff cup of fresh ground coffee and maybe someday a Jersey Mike’s bagel!
As another Jersey transplant, I can attest that the central PA bagels are a poor substitute. Bagel Lovers comes closest from what I have seen. So Jersey Bagels in midtown? hmmmm, maybe we should talk Mike
Ummm, there are enough bagels in Midtown. I want bagels Uptown. That’s where I live and it will be out of my way going to work to go to Midtown. Bagels Uptown or else…
Good bagels are hard to find. I have a proposition for you. You open the shop and I have killer sticky buns I’ve been trying to find the right market for.
Those look great. What about a delivery option? Who wants to bother getting dressed and driving/walking to get bagels first thing in the morning? I would, of course, require a minimum order for delivery. I can’t picture your driver traveling halfway across town to deliver ONE bagel.
I am a bagel snob too and have been missing real bagels since I moved to Midtown from Brooklyn last December. Imagine my surprise when I found out they might be made, not in my neighborhood but across the hall. These better be good bagels.
