Abandon Ship! Everyone’s Leaving The Patriot
Just got word from a reliable source that virtually everyone who matters is leaving the Patriot News this January.
Details are sketchy, but word has it that the PN offered relatively generous “buyouts” for many of it’s employees.
And from the looks of the list of those who are confirmed to be leaving five weeks from now, I’m wondering- who’s going to write the news? Will the PN become an newswire-feed only publication? Who will write the witty editorials? Who will cover the human interest stories? Who will spin the Mayor’s press releases? Oh wait…John Luciew isn’t on that list…yet.
Confirmed Patriot News Employees Who Are Leaving January 1:
Dale Davenport
Herb Field
John Goodrich
John Troutman.
Jim Lewis
Jerry Gleason
Frank Cozzoli
Ellen Lyon
Mary Bradley
Gerry Lenton
David DeKok
Mary Warner
Nancy Eshelman
Alan Hayakawa
It’s Garry Lenton…and Nick Horvath is leaving, too.
Their lucky that Charles Thompson and Jan Murphy aren’t leaving.
Well, not everyone is leaving. I’ll be hanging around.
I’m hoping to put up a blog post sometime in the next few days to talk about what it all means for us.
WHAT!?!?! I can’t believe that John Luciew is not on that list! Patriot wants to keep plagiarism around. Hehe.
@DanielVictor- I know you’re staying. And am really looking forward to your post about the situation.
You’re certainly one of the good ones over there.
As MODE continues to grow, would be happy to discuss writing opportunities with any ex-PN staff. Luckily we don’t strangle the creative spirit of our writers, and we’re open to a far-wider gamut of potential editorial. Feel free to pitch me.
Thanks for the head’s up Jersey.

Nancy is leaving? I LOVE Nancy. I am going to be heartbroken.
Namaste.
Our city paper in Atlanta, Creative Loafing, just filed for bankruptcy a few weeks ago. Just wait, Harrisburg. It’s all down hill. I don’t care how much change is promised us, it’s not going to happen for a long time.
This is old news. The new news is there is another buyout in action for 2010. And they’re trying to push people out the door before they have to pay out.
