How Much “News” Is In The Newspaper?

Exactly one year ago today, I decided to have a little fun with a newspaper.

After mindlessly and habitually blazing through the daily paper in under fifteen minutes, I got to wondering- just how much “news” is in your average daily newspaper?

So I decided to find out. I bought four copies of a Wednesday paper, laid them all out on the floor and cut out the “news” from the front and back of each sheet of two copies and then I cut out the ads and filler from the front and back of each sheet of two copies.

What I found wasn’t very surprising.

Enjoy- (Music: Bodysnatchers from Radiohead’s ‘In Rainbows’)

On Deck…

Here are a couple of items I’ve been stewing about for quite some time but have chose not to write extensively about until my battle with The City over the Amusement Tax comes to an amicable conclusion. Think of this post as a teaser of things to come from that loudmouth from Jersey. (Who often goes “where he doesn’t need to go”, according to one local official)

DAUPHIN COUNTY DOMESTIC RELATIONS

In my personal, extensive, exhaustive experience, Dauphin County Domestic Relations (DCDR) has been the most absolutely demeaning, degrading, biased, racist, bigoted, unfair “public” service office I have EVER, EVER, EVER had to deal with.

I’d rather spend a week-straight waiting in line at a combination of PennDot, Traffic Court and The Dentist than spend a single minute within the 70′s decorated walls of the Dauphin County Domestic Relations office.

And I say this as a single Dad who’s always paid my child support on time- regardless of what DCDR has to say.

You see, I have a MAJOR problem with being generalized as a human being.

And there is no other “public” office that does a better job at generalizing people than DCDR.

I’ve been to the hearings. I’ve dealt with the “officers” (if you can call them that). I’ve sat in the stinky, filthy, dirty, closed-circuit camera policed waiting room, biting my nails just hoping that I get to see an officer that has an ounce of humility and compassion.

But we never do.

And this battle, friends, isn’t about me getting the short end of the stick.

This is different than getting a parking ticket or getting towed or getting raped taxed for entertaining the public.

No, friends. This particular battle is about what is right and what is just and what is fair.

And in my experience, The Dauphin County Domestic Relations system does not treat men fairly.

And we’ll explore that further in the months to come…

THE NEXT MAYORAL ELECTION

It’s a big one, kids.

(And come to think of it, I’m sure I’ll be writing about this one before the Amusement Tax is reformed)

Let’s be real for a second here.

There is no justifiable reason for any elected official to be in office for more than two consecutive terms.

Maybe it’s “fear of the unknown” or “fear of change” or just downright voter apathy that’s kept this guy in office for as long as he’s been.

But the time has come for a changing of the guard in Harrisburg.

And I’m not going to sit here and get into a pissing match with filthyman or hbgtruth or steven119 about the merits of a man who has sat in a smoky office for twenty five years spending our tax dollars on Annie Oakley’s gun and a Vampire Hunting kit while crack is being sold by twelve year olds at the corner of Green and Muench.

We can rename all of the neighborhoods we’d like- but the fact remains: we’re due for a new Mayor.

I’d hate to say it like this, but at this point- it’s Anyone But Reed.

The Primary is creeping up quick. And don’t be fooled by all of the “news” lately.

Oh, do you think it’s a coincidence that we’re hearing about our streets finally being repaved? Or that there’s this miraculous new two-hundred-plus-million dollar deal to whore out lease our parking garages to a NYC investment firm?

Pay attention, Harrisburg. It’s gonna be a long, hot summer.

Show Announcement- MIKE DOUGHTY- FREE SHOW at ABC

The show will culminate a day’s worth of celebrations including the second annual Outhouse Races and annual Keg Olympics outdoors and will begin at 9:30PM.

**UPDATE** Supporting Mike Doughty will be Tom Hamilton’s American Babies- featuring Joe Russo and Scott Metzger.

Following an intimate duo-set with bassist Andrew “Scrap” Livingston, Doughty will rock the house til’ the wee-hours with a very special and kinda-rare solo DJ Set.

All of this goodness goes down on Saturday May 31, 2008. The second-year of our outdoor stage lineup features sets from FDR’s New Deal at 2 and Slimfit from Lancaster at 5PM.
Tickets go on-sale…oh wait…there’s no tickets- ’cause this is a FREE SHOW.

Mike Doughty is a true multi-media artist: musician, songwriter, poet,
playwright, photographer, and an avid, eloquent blogger on his own website.
Doughty’s new album, GOLDEN DELICIOUS, is in stores February 19, 2008. On
GOLDEN DELICIOUS, Doughty hewed close to his “dude theory” — the idea of
making a relaxed record that sounds like a bunch of dudes playing music for
the pure joy of playing. GRAMMY winner Dan Wilson (Semisonic, Jewel, Dixie
Chicks) returned as producer.

In Support of the Stay Positive leak…

This is from John Tyler-

I guess it pretty much sums it up-

I just got done reading the whole thread that you linked from, and wanted to respond to your post because I felt it was nice to read something that was even handed and not proselytizing.

On a personal level (read: delete this at will from the comments, but I just want to toss this out there), the Hold Steady are one of a handful of artists who are capable of genuinely effecting me. More than any other band they regularly reach for and attain the Modernist ideal of transcendence.

As much as any fan might feel loyal to the band, I think its important to remember why we feel that way in the first place: the way the music can touch us.

I was in a terrible place today and listening to Stay Positive, that changed. The album turned my day around, and considering that I am at a significant transitional point in my life right now, I can safely say that its effects will extend far beyond the next few hours.

Of course that doesn’t change anything about the ethics of intellectual property or artists’ rights, but I think it does demonstrate that at the end of the day the work of art is more important than the means of distribution.

Those of us who are (or, at least consider ourselves to be) fans will buy the album, see the shows, and buy Craig and the boys as many rounds of drinks as we can afford, regardless of listening to an advance copy.

I agree that whoever posted the leak probably isn’t a fan. I don’t feel bad for downloading the album, but even still I wouldn’t post a leak if the band had trusted me with an advance.

I think you’re right and that any negative feelings people are experiencing right now should be directed towards the person(s) who acted intentionally and in violation of a
trust (express or implied) that had been granted to them by the band. The leak will not cause me to give one penny less to the band than I would otherwise, but the person who leaked it has certainly made sure that the band will be deprived of income from other (non-fan) individuals, and that person should feel guilty. But I won’t.

Already this album has made me shudder, laugh, smile, and cry. I’ve already taken its title to heart, and that is what matters.

And even if Craig, Franz, and Koob show up at my house tomorrow and, as people trying to make a living tell as artists, tell me that they’re upset that I downloaded the album; I still think that they, as artists, would be happy that their creation, their music, their art is helping people to be happy, feel unified, and stay positive. Even if it is two months early.

Thoughts on the ‘Stay Positive’ leak

From what I can gather, it appears that The Hold Steady’s forthcoming EP Stay Positive was predictably leaked into the greedy little hands of the internet sometime yesterday- nearly six weeks before the scheduled release date of July 15.

Message boards and scene reports are already abuzz with speculation of an earlier rescheduled release date due to the leak.

So that’s the story.

News of this wasn’t surprising. These days, it’s almost a requirement for any band whose main marketing arena is the internet and social media to “leak” a record.

But this leak most likely wasn’t a marketing ploy by the label.

No, this leak came from some writer, reviewer, music director or radio DJ working in the industry.

Judging by some of the responses on the band’s message forum, it sounds like most of the hardcore fans are even debating whether or not to dip their beaks into the torrent sites in search of a copy.
Sure, sure- this isn’t the first time a record was leaked. It happens to nearly every new release in this day and age.

Will it affect record sales? Maybe a little, but judging by the tone of the thread on The Hold Steady’s message board it sounds as if nearly all of the die-hards might download a copy (if they haven’t already) but will still purchase the digital, disc or vinyl version when it’s officially released in July.

And there are some arguments on the board that this leak is the equivalent of the Titanic hitting that iceberg for the band’s fourth record, Stay Positive.

What do I think? I’m glad you asked.

I think that having a tool such as the internet at our fingertips today comes with great responsibility.

Sure, it’s easy to get caught up in reckless abandon on the internet- what with all of the porn and politics- but when it comes to the music- it’s a completely different world these days.

What’s most bothersome to me about this situation is that someone working in the industry got an advance copy of the record. That person was most likely either a journalist of some sort, an FM DJ or an independent blogger.

The person who leaked this record was not a fan.

Trust me, I know PLENTY of Hold Steady fans- hardcore, borderline-religious fans- and if one of them were strolling down the street and came across a copy of the record, chances are they’d go send a Private Message to Koob on the message board asking where to send the disc back to.

Hold Steady fans (as far as I can tell) seem to be a wholesome, genuinely respectful bunch.

So how does one greedy blogger justify taking the proverbial Christmas Gifts in the basement closet nearly six weeks before the holiday and blast it out there for all the world to take?

Anonymously, of course.

Sure, the promo discs were encrypted somehow. But have you used the internet before? It’s not difficult to find programs to de-authorize everything. (I’d safely guess that Netflix has doubled the personal DVD collection of many-a-thousand person)

But it’s the anonymity that’s most dangerous with this scenario. Some blogger who was fortunate enough to be given an advance copy of this disc felt it was his or her right to take a hard working band’s labor-fruits and put them out there for the masses to take at their own free will.

Will the blogger or writer potentially ruin it for the rest of us?

Not likely.

But they sure have personified the fact that the music business is an ugly, dangerous and impossibly hard to trust beast.

Many people I’ve met seem to be in this biz strictly for personal gain; of course we all need to eat, but where’s the compassion? The RESPECT?

It seems to be missing in the lexicon of the industry.

Who leaked Stay Positive? We’ll most likely never know.

But here I am listening to Stay Positive for the third time since I downloaded it last night.

And dude, it’s a GREAT record.

But I have to admit that I do feel sort of guilty.

Sure, sure, I’m not the guy that uploaded it. Promoters don’t get advance copies of new releases. We get the headaches of the tour.

But the feeling I have right now is similar to when I was eight years old and found “Santa’s” offerings in the storage closet in the basement of the house I grew up in…in November.
