State of The City…in 50 Words

Six thousand, eight hundred and thirty nine words.

Two hundred eighteen paragraphs.

Six hundred twenty two lines.

Nineteen pages in twelve point, single-spaced, Times-New Roman font within Microsoft Word.

And it all can be boiled down into fifty key words.

Oh, you didn’t have the time to read through the entire text of today’s State of The City Address by Mayor Reed?

(It does seem pretty long and tiresome, eh?)

Perhaps you weren’t invited to attend for some reason or another.

Or maybe you didn’t want to lay out up to $7,500.00 to attend
Well, here it is in a nutshell.

In fifty words, acutally.

The following is a Tag Cloud- and this particular one is the fifty words most commonly used in Reed’s speech earlier today. The words in the largest font are the most commonly used (Harrisburg, City, Year, Development) and the smallest are still pretty frequent, considering this sucker’s nearly seven thousand words long, but not as frequent as the largest font words (Upgrade, investment, higher, chamber)

I’ve got to say, the address while quite long was actually very motivating. The mayor is a good speaker and definitely owned every statistic of the city – I was impressed.

Oh PS it didn’t cost $7,500 to attend is was $70 per person. It was just the mayor after all!

The highest price “VIP” table was $7500.00 according to the CREDC website.

It is a great speech. You wouldn’t be promoting shows at ABC if it weren’t for Reed. You may not see it now, but he’s done a ton for this city.

I don’t see where you are getting the 7,500, the highest sponsor level is $2,500 on the website for a table of 8 people. I don’t think anyone would pay that much money for a seat at that address.

And I don’t really know that guy all that well, I just said his speech was pretty motivating and it seems like taking a city that was 2nd most depressed place in the country in 82 to top 100 places to live in 2007 is good progress. Sure there is plenty more to do and there are negative things that have happened, but I think some credit is due there. Just out of curiosity, what things has the guy done to give you such a bad impression about him anyway?

the mayor is sick. The business community knows it and they are attempting to figure out how to replace him with an “acceptable” choice.
The fact is that the mayor has used identity politics to divide this city and he will be voted out. Thompson is narcissistic and the city is as close to bankruptcy as a city can be…Ron Buxton’s comments notwithstanding…
We stand on the edge of insolvency and people still call the mayor brilliant. That is stupid and insular behavior which will not lead this city forward. Yes, it might continue to make a few people very wealthy, but it will not take the city forward.
We need real leadership that can talk to all constituencies and pull the city out of the doldrums.
Drive around and look at the slums of Harrisburg, and then ask yourself, “how does the city manage this stuff?”
Then, try to flush your toilet; yes, your toilet. In the city you can’t flush your toilet in certain areas because thr sewer lines are in such poor condition they back up…
That issue is directly ties to the ininerator and artifacts versus infrastructure investment, all brought to you by the “brilliant” mayor.
This is bad and must be made better, or…we are sunk..
