Patriot News Panhandling

From the “holy shit, are they serious!?” department:

A local band issued a press release indicating that they’re trying to record a new album.

The Patriot News, of course, ran with the story.

Which is fine.

That’s what the press is supposed to do.

But what leaves THIS writer flummoxed (again) is that the press release was merely a fund-raising effort.

Get this: “Donate $25 and get a band sticker. Donate $50 or more and you’ll get a sticker and a free copy of the CD when it’s released.Donate $75 or more and you get the sticker, the CD and you’ll be listed in the CD booklet.”

Scratching your head?

So am I.

Sure, it’s tough to record a great album. It costs lots and lots of money…not to mention time.

But the way that most bands that I know RAISE that money is by doing two things- PLAYING SHOWS and SELLING MERCH.

Not by proverbially standing on a street corner trying to busk twenty five dollar stickers.

C’mon, guys. You’ve been at this HOW long? Ten years? Fifteen?

Things that make you go “hmmm”.

I was just thinking you’d done a great job getting publicity about ‘indie’ in the PN and found this entry of yours. Time to sell some ‘indie support’ buttons?

mm, screw the buttons, they suck. Make it t-shirts. or nickers that say, “Indie, my ass!”
