Take The Power Back

And I really do mean that in the nicest way possible.

If you live within the city of Harrisburg, it is your civic duty to go and vote today- May 15, 2007.

Forget about Bush. Never mind the BIG stuff for now- big things happen LOCALLY.

Movements are sprung by small communities- and change catches on like WILDFIRE.

I’d hate to use the term “revolution”, but it’s time for SOMETHING to happen here in Harrisburg-

The horrible part isn’t so much that people don’t know that our city has problems.

Everyone who has the ability to make a difference in this coming election knows that we are amassing HUNDREDS of MILLIONS of dollars of debt with no solid or aggressive revenue streams to pay our lenders back, our schools are a disaster, crime is increasing DAILY, our police are understaffed, overworked and have zero morale, the tax revenue department is UNABLE or UNWILLING to provide accurate accounting reports of city funds, and they can’t even plow our streets in the winter.

Oh, and rumor has it- the city has bankruptcy papers prepared and ready to go at a moments notice- we’re teetering on the edge of receivership.

Everyone in Harrisburg knows (or should know) that things are in DIRE need of restructuring here.

But the most important thing they can do about it TODAY is go and cast their votes for who they sincerely believe will do the most good for the people, businesses, landscape and FUTURE of our city.

Personally, I cannot vote for anyone who is endorsed by Mayor Reed and the current administration.

I’ll be voting for Kia Hansard, Gloria Martin-Roberts and Susan Brown-Wilson today.

I want a proactive, challenging, well balanced, well spoken and humble city council.

And Brad, Calobe and Euginia steered by Reed are unable to fit that bill- in my humble opinion.

When you vote, look for the ballot question. In their infinite wisdom, the Republican controlled couty burried the question on the upper right hand side of the ballot. Democrat voters can easily miss it altogether since there is no heading and no space between the question and the Republican candidates.

Saw your post on PennLive re being turned away. Did they block you from voting on the referendum question, too. If so, then I suggest filing a complaint. They should at least have allowed you to vote on that.

For the future, make sure you register as a party for the primary – then switch back to independent for the general election. That’s what I’ve done several times.

No, I would have been able to vote for the question.

But seriously- why should I have to switch parties in order to vote through the whole process?

If I’m able to register as an ‘independent’ then I should get the full voting privileges of Democrats and Republicans.

That’s not the way it works in Pennsylvania. It’s one of the reasons change is very hard to come by. The “party” decides who it wants to run, and it’s just a matter of the electorate rubberstamping the picks. Usually, the “party” persuades the non-picks to go away before the primary so that there are no actual choices on the ballot. That’s what happened with the senatorial campaign last year – the ‘party’ picked the candidate to unseat Santorum and the others – better candidates in my mind – stepped out or risked being frozen out of other elections in the future

Welcome to Pennsylvania, land of corruption
